PCN workforce plans to 2022

Implementation of the NW London primary care workforce transformation plan is facilitated by the Primary Care Workforce Task & Finish group.

Phase one of the primary care workforce plan, submission of the PCN Workforce Templates, was completed on 31 August 2020 and phase two is is now under way.

The new updated PCN workforce planning template for PCNs to provide indicative recruitment intentions for 2021/22 is now available on the FutureNHS website. Further information on this template can be accessed on the FutureNHS workforce planning workspace.  Please ensure PCNs are accessing the template through the link provided and submitting completed templates to their CCG by 31 October (2020).

All previous versions of the template/ tool should be disregarded as these new versions incorporate the new nursing associate and trainee nursing associate roles.

If you or anyone in your region have any queries regarding October/November’s submission deadlines please contact england.primarycareworkforce@nhs.net.

Timeline

31 August: PCNs to formally submit recruitment intentions for 2020/21 to their CCGs.
30 September: CCGs to agree aggregate local plan with PCN clinical directors
31 October: PCNs to provide indicative recruitment intentions for 2021-2022 for recruitment of wider workforce including GPs, nurses, paramedics and ARRS roles

Under the Network Contract DES which went live on 1 July 2019, funding is made available to PCNs through a new Additional Roles Reimbursement Scheme to recruit up to an additional 20,000 full time equivalent (FTE) posts across specific roles, over the next five years.

The Additional Roles Reimbursement Scheme has been put in place to grow additional capacity through new roles in general practice, and by doing so, help to solve the workforce shortage.

The Additional Roles Reimbursement Scheme entitles PCNs to access funding to support recruitment across the specific reimbursable roles below. See section 2.3 of the Network Contract DES for details.

  • clinical pharmacists
  • social prescribing link workers
  • physician associates
  • paramedics
  • first contact physiotherapists
  • pharmacy technicians
  • occupational therapists
  • dietitians
  • chiropodists / podiatrists
  • mental health practitioners

The additional roles reimbursement scheme is expanding to include paramedics from April 2021. Click here to view some of the prerequisites to PCNs claiming reimbursement under the ARRS, with links to tools and further guidance to support decision making.

Musculoskeletal First Contact Physiotherapists: NHSEI webinar and Q&A session

Over 350 participants joined the MSK FCP webinar and Q&A session across various roles and organisations. A large number of questions were received via the Q&A chat box and whilst a vast majority of the questions were picked up by the expert speakers and panellists, the team will be reviewing all the questions and identifying common themes. These will be addressed as part of a dedicated MSK FCP FAQ and launched on the FutureNHS platform. The recording and presentations of the webinar is available now.
