World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW) is a global campaign that is celebrated annually to improve awareness and understanding of AMR and encourage best practices among the public, One Health stakeholders and policymakers, who all play a critical role in reducing the further emergence and spread of AMR (WHO).
The theme for World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW) 2025 is “Act Now: Protect Our Present, Secure Our Future.” This theme underscores the urgent need for bold, coordinated, cross-sectoral action to address AMR, a growing global threat that is already affecting our health, food systems, environment and economies. AMR is not a distant challenge; it is a present danger that demands immediate, sustained action. Drug-resistant infections are increasing, yet awareness, financing, investment and action remain insufficient.
Help to combat AMR and promote safer antimicrobial use by:
- Ensuring prescriptions are appropriate and adhere to local guidelines.
- Educating patients by utilising the resources on the TARGET toolkit.
- Encouraging the use of NHS initiatives such as Pharmacy First for the seven clinical conditions and the influenza vaccination program.
- Pledging to support the better use of antibiotics by visiting the Antibiotic Guardian website. This is open to all primary care health care professionals and staff working in GP practices.
- Participating in campaigns like WAAW, display posters, engage on social media, attend virtual webinars and promote Antibiotic Guardian pledges.
- Regularly review and audit your practice’s antimicrobial stewardship activities.
