Inclusive recruitment

Meet Sarah-Jane, our resident Reservist Recruitment Advisor. She has been working in collaboration with Jolanta Lvova – our Corporate Governance Manager.

Starting from June, they have hosted monthly virtual sessions for Capital City College engaging over 50 students from underrepresented groups. With a focus on the NWL Reservists Programme, they offered insights into the commitments expected from both employer and employee, further steps into employment and alternative career paths, as well as development and educational opportunities such as functional skills following the completion of the programme.

One of the biggest benefits of the NWL Reservists Programme that was put to the students is the flexibility and exposure that it offers. The students, if they were to join the programme, would be able to mobilise across various wards and departments and as a result they gain access to wider opportunities within the NHS.

Students’ concerns and questions were addressed openly, notably the ‘one-size fits-all’ approach of a uniform application form applicable for all NHS roles.

This led to the introduction of a shortened application form in response; one application has since been received using this form. The form encourages applicants to focus on providing information about themselves in a less pressured way, with the option to attach a current CV should they wish to do so.

As a point of contact from Capital City College, John James – Employer Engagement and Progression Officer, supports this initiative and the shortened version of the application form is to be rolled out and trialled with the students in the month of September.

Sarah-Jane’s commitment to offering diverse career and education opportunities to all is evident, reflecting what we stand for and what we mean by our strapline “Empowering Futures and Transforming Lives”.

A word from Sarah-Jane

“As part of our ongoing commitment to the NWL Reservists Programme, and to ensure we offer ongoing pastoral care, we hold fortnightly drop-in sessions for our workforce to come along and meet both ourselves and their Reservist colleagues. This allows us all to communicate directly and to ensure that any questions are dealt with timely and accurately. In addition, we are hoping to launch in the Autumn our first Reservist Newsletter as an alternative communication method.”
