Amber heat-health alert in effect for London: What you need to know

12 August 2025

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and the Met Office have upgraded their previous Yellow alert to an Amber Heat-Health Alert across London. This alert is in place from 9am today (12 August) until 6pm tomorrow (13 August).

What does an Amber Alert mean?

An Amber alert signals that significant impacts are likely across health and social care services, and the whole population could be at risk due to high temperatures. Vulnerable groups, such as older adults (65+) and those with health conditions, are particularly at risk, but younger people may also be affected.

Potential impacts

  • Increased risk of illness and a rise in deaths, especially among vulnerable groups
  • Higher demand for NHS and social care services
  • Overheating in hospitals, care homes, and indoor environments, posing risks to patients and residents
  • Challenges for staff and services, including workforce fatigue and transport disruptions
  • Medication management issues and power demand exceeding capacity
  • Wider impacts on other sectors, such as travel delays.

How to stay safe during the heatwave

  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol
  • Keep cool indoors: Close curtains on windows facing the sun and use fans if safe
  • Avoid the midday sun: Stay in the shade between 11am and 3pm.
  • Check on vulnerable people: Friends, family, and neighbours who may need extra help
  • Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heatstroke: Seek medical help if symptoms occur.
